I wasn’t around when Gil’s journey started. But when our father died I gathered the stories and today I share with you what became Dad’s eulogy (see attached).

For a short time after graduating high school Gil worked with Mom at CoatCraft (a clothing factory overlooking Connie Mack Stadium). He likewise recommended me to his later workplace for my first two summer jobs at Villager (ladies' clothing) while in college. I had been a bridesmaid at his wedding to Beverley Small and I enjoyed staying at their home during the week, traveling home to Alloway, NJ alternate weekends. Although we were nearly 6 years and a foot of height apart, Gil The Charmer actually convinced several coworkers that we were twins! And he continued to look out for me as any good big brother would. At the local bar on Fridays he made sure my rounds of vodka and orange arrived in separate glasses. I was only allowed one vodka, but I could drink all the oranges he could manage.
Wayne married, completed his United States Air Force service in several states and settled his family in Delaware. Gil and Bev had one son together, Gilbert Jr; they divorced but in later years it was always Beverly who could help me connect with a telno or a passed message. Gil remained in Philly while I moved from Philly to Delaware and eventually Barbados, where I married. We have no children.
Gil found a new partner in Lucy Boyd and our family was enlarged by the birth of their daughter, Jamie.
Our mother was diagnosed with cancer in 1982. During her latter hospitalizations when our family members struggled to lift her spirits, Gil would pull a chair up to her bed, whisper in her ear, and find that tiny chuckle that reminded us of the strong loving constant jovial partner and mother she had always been. I was truly grateful for his presence knowing Mom treasured having the five of us together.

It was a lot like living with Tom Sawyer, being Gil’s little sister. He always had a plan at work, pushed the limits of the rules we lived by, saw a way to add excitement to an ordinary activity …
And frequently landed in the penalty box for his efforts.
He was born on Mom’s birthday, which fell in the week of Mother’s Day, so he was sure to approach me every year the Saturday before their special day. (Wayne, the elder brother, was immune to this appeal.) “Hey, Sis. Let’s you and me put our money together and buy Mom something nice. How much you got?” And so we would raid my piggy bank for $12.75 to add to his $5. Taking me by the hand he would head for The Ridge (Avenue). After wandering from store to store we’d invest in a miniature Whitman’s Sampler of chocolates or a flashy scarf and materials to make a card. ”You can do that, she liked that last one you made,” he would flatter me. “Want that paper doll? It’s only $2.” On the way home we would just happen to find a cap gun for him and some sweet treat to share. Money done. And we both signed Mom’s Mothers' Day/birthday card, of course!
He was an effective and imaginative teaser. Wayne is, a thoughtful soul who recognized Gil’s jibes from afar. So I would be recruited to help. At breakfast after our parents went off to work Gil would surreptiously align the cereal, milk, etc to form a wall with me on his side; then draw me into sharing wise cracks about Wayne (lest I fall victim to the little devil I could see).
And then there was the day when I was about 7 years old I came home from school for lunch. Opening the door with my key, I was confused by the chorus of sound from inside. Vacuum zooming in the upstairs bedroom. Washing machine churning in the kitchen. As I walked through astonished I found Mom, dressed as she had left for work, leisurely sipping a drink. “Hi. I came home to have lunch with you. Sit down, your brother made sandwiches.”
Neither Wayne nor I had to do any chores that day. Caught playing hooky, Gil’s assignment was to clean top to bottom. It was the last day he played hooky … and stayed home!

To family, our deepest sympathy. We had not been in touch in many years. Wayne, his older brother thought of him often. Uncle Gil will be missed. Join in honoring their life - plant a memorial tree
